The New Dumbland, Only Two Years Late

Two years after I started and after perhaps 3 or 4 almost-finished designs which I never got around to implementing outside of the test site, this site has a new layout. Big deal.

Naturally the process could not have gone off without some seriously boneheaded mistakes. To my credit I remembered to make a complete backup of the site (whether I keep that backup in a safe place now is another question). My good sense did not extend to exporting all my entries so that they could be easily re-imported to the new system. I believe I got them all back again and into the new database, but there could be a few incoming 404s that will just never be fixed. I hope the Internet can carry on.

Projects are offline for the time being. In the previous design I had put a lot of work into the templates and tagging to enable simple connections between entries and projects so that I could quickly tie a post on my front page to a related project. I was quite proud of how well it worked. It would have worked even better if I’d ever actually posted any entries related to the projects. So projects will be back, as soon as I figure out a useful way to present them.

The errors will continue.

I should note here that while the templates I use are all my own work, I took inspiration from a couple of notable sources. First of all, Hog Bay Software’s excellent iOS app PlainText. I bought it, and can’t recommend it highly enough. Second, Scott Wallick’s plaintxt.org, a collection of Wordpress themes that emphasise less shit on the screen.
