iOS 4.2 for iPod touch 4G

iOS 4.2.1 is now available within iTunes. Or, you could visit one of the many sites out there that republish jailbreaking news, and get direct links to the firmware packages, and download it using some sort of accelerator that opens multiple connections and downloads in fragments. Nothing wrong with that, and probably faster than iTunes.

Not having an HDTV and thus having precisely zero reason for a new Apple TV, the big feature of this release - AirPlay - means nothing to me. As with FaceTime, I’d like to see them release support for all sorts of platforms, Macs and PCs alike.

I’m not holding my breath.

The new printing features I might use from time to time, but only when Apple gets around to finishing off support for any networked printer, and gets the iWork apps onto the iPod touch. I want to be able to consult and update my stupidly complicated Inscription spreadsheet on the go, dernit.

Two new features I love though: Find in Page in Safari. The Google/Bing search box now also lets me search for a string within the current page. Overdue, glad it’s there. Also, swiping backwards twice on the multitasking bar reveals a volume control. A bit redundant, sure, since the iPod touch does have hardware volume controls. However, my chosen case provides pretty weak access to these buttons, so this is one piece of entirely redundant software I’m very pleased with.

Also notable is the newly-free status of MobileMe’s Find My iPhone feature. Notable but again, not really applicable to me. Where is my iPod touch? It’s with me. All the time. Still, perhaps it’s a good sign that Apple is willing to take a look at MobileMe’s offering and pricing.

I’m still not holding my breath.
